A comparison of possible effects of acute and chronic stress on post-menopausal urinary oestrogen levels

      This preliminary study investigated the possibility of differential effects of the chronic stress of depression and the acute stress of surgery on post-menopausal oestrogen levels.
      Depressive illness was associated with significantly lower post-menopausal urinary oestrogen excretion than was found in a control group of normal healthy women. Oestrogen excretion in the latter group had a higher range and mean than values definitive of the post-menopause which are generally accepted in the literature.
      There was a trend, which did not reach significance, towards higher urinary oestrogen levels in two surgical groups than in the normal healthy group.
